I have 2 dogs that are mostly outdoor dogs. They get fairly dirty after awhile. I have a few questions because I am just learning how do bathe and groom my dogs.

Questions:
1.What temperature should it be outside when I bathe my dogs? (Hint: my mom won't let me bathe them in the house.)

2.What type of normal dog shampoo should I use for my dogs?

3.What should I bathe my dogs in outside?

4.Should I get a bathing glove/brush that they sell at Walmart to bathe your dog with?

5.Does shampoo ever go bad?

How Often
Depending on type of hair coat, every 1-6 mos. is all that is necessary. 1 month for dustmop type coats, 6 months for slick single layer coats.

What temp.
Comfortable enough outside for you to be barefoot with your pants rolled up, and getting splashed without serious risk of catching cold.

What shampoo
Any kind of dog shampoo will work as long as you don'twash the dog too often.

Where
A small plastic wading pool works best. Or on a concrete drive.

Shampoo going bad?
Not so far as I know.

i think texgurl pretty much covered everything.
you shouldn't wash your dog more often than once a week.
when i had a big dog i would wash him in the driveway with the garden hose that worked out nicely... until the yard flooded Smile

I wash my big dog Kassie outside with an oatmeal shampoo and a garden hose

Jeffrey however is smaller and has short hair and gets very cold in water even when it is nice outside. So we HAVE to give him baths in the tub to control the temp of the water so he is comfy

Oh yeah when using the tub I always put down a rag on the bottom for some traction because the dog does not like the feel of his claws on the slippery bottom

Well, I would say that the very maximum number of times you can bath your dog is once a month. Any more than that can cause skin and/or coat problems. My girls are all indoor dogs so they don't get dirty alot, so once every 3 to 6 months is good.

Where? In the bathtub. It's a bit of a challenge getting an 85 pound dog in the tub, but I'd rather do that than just take them out in the backyard and hose them down.

The water temperature depends on the temperature in the house and outside. If it's cold, then the water is more on the warm side. If it's hot (and I live in a desert with temps up to 120), then the water is more on the cool side. Never any extremes though, I don't use hot water or water thats as cold as it would be coming from the garden hose.

And as Texgurl said, any shampoo works. Although if any of your dogs have dry skin, you may want to use an oatmeal shampoo. Also, living outside, your dogs may benefit from a flea shampoo or other insecticide or insect repellant shampoo. Just make sure they don't have sensitive skin because the insecticides in flea shampoo can be harsh.

And actually, yes, shampoo can go bad if you are using a flea shampoo or medicated shampoo.

Oh, and no you don't necessarily need any brushes or gloves or anything unless you want to use them. When my dogs get baths, I use my bare hands to lather the shampoo.

Also, if your dog needs to be tidied up between baths, then you can get away with using one of those moist towel things/pet wipes that you can find at the petstore.

I usually bathe my dog whenever it gets warm outside-80 degrees Fahrenheit. And I also use my bare hands to wash Katie..but I don't bathe her too often cause she doesn't like it very much. Today, though I might try it. Smile

TIP : i always use whitening shampoo on my dog (he is white of course) and also i take the shampoo and put some of it in a water bottle and add some water to it to thin it out. its much nicer to worh with that way you can be sure to get all over the dog without using a half a botle. its also a lot easier to wash out after too.
