Here is a good video I just watched, it's not very graphic at all and it make some good points on statistics of dogs born vs. being adopted every year.

Check it out:

That was very, very sad. But it's totally true. All of my dogs and cats will be rescued. And I'll try to get dogs with behavior and health problems because I know I can work through them when other people may not be able to.

I didn't watch the video. Everyone else said that it was sad. But all of my dogs were/are rescues, even if they weren't adopted. And all of my pets are/will be spayed or neutered.

There is one solution that may work. The person that surrenders an unwanted pet should be made to do the dirty deed. Yes, I mean they should be made to inject the lethal medication. I am sure that most folks will make sure that any future pets were fixed.

I don't think that would solve anything: I think it would just lead to more dogs being let loose on the street - if anything, it would be a bigger problem.

You have a good point. Thinks are working so well now that we need not try anything drastic. Maybe we can ask people to fix their pets by saying pretty please with a cherry on top.

I think that one of the only ways to get it through to people, is sadly enough, to basically pay them to do it. Which, as we know, not going to happen.

Asking nicely, wouldn't that be somethin'? Haha.

I agree, asking nicely should be the best way to go. But how often do we need to ask?

Look at all the shows on Animal Planet that deal with the pet overpopulation problem. Look at all the public service announcements on television reminding people to fix their pets. Even dog food companies are in the act. Yet, with all those requests millions of our unwanted animals are put to sleep every year, and that number doesn't seem to get any better.

I think we need more drastic actions.

People driving under the influence is also a serious problem. However, it used to be much worse. It has gotten better because law enforcement has been cracking down on DUI drivers. The penalities have also become stiffer. The end result is that their are fewer drunk drivers then in the past.

Some laws with some real teeth need to be encated to protect unwanted pets. I really believe that only then will most folks get the message.

Yes, all very true. What makes it worse is that some people will just never understand - no matter how hard you try. They don't look at dogs the way "we" do. They say "Oh, it's just a dog." And that is what is just too bad - for them and to the dogs.

Hardcore action would be great, and then or course people would be saying, "I can't afford it." Which true, maybe they can't, but there are facilities that aid in the cost of spay/neuter operations - which is nice for those who truely can't afford it. But then again, if you can't afford it, should you really have gotten a dog - one that isn't fixed to top it off. There are a lot of different things to look at, and I can't think of them all - or how to really fix the problem.

But truth is; something must be done, and soon.

Yes it is horrible.
Actually, in Brevard County, Florida they are trying to pass a law that your cats and dogs must be spayed or neutered. Although if you are a real breeder who shows dogs you can buy a permit so your dogs don't have to be spayed or neutered. I think it is a great idea. But yet people could still buy the permit and breed their mutts if they really wanted to. But it's a step up. Actually I believe I might be adopting a greyhound soon. I'm going to be volunteering at a Greyhound rescue center nearby that rescues retired and abused greyhounds. I just know I'm going to fall in love with one and then my family will, too. =]

My cousin has a greyhound and she loves him! I heard they're a lot like big cats and will sleep all day if you let them. It's sounds too easy a dog for me, but they're such sweeties and it's too bad they're used to race.
