thats a great idea actually, some video of discs cutting through some controlled smoke or fog to see how they are flying from an aerodynamic standpoint

Slow motion video of a well executed drive by a top pro like Avery would be amazing. Filmed in as many feet per second as possible please!!!

DO IT!!!!!

How the sound of a disc changes as the speed increases and the displacement of air becomes audible?

What mode of air flow over the disc happens at different speeds like laminar etc?

What kinds of and how severely and in which way forming vortices occur in which parts of the disc? Normal clean throw versus one with off axis torque and what's the difference in drag and slowing down of the disc?

What kind of stresses the throwing action put on the body?

Which sports lag behind a top disc golfers drive in the speed of motions?

Here are some interesting facts: I've heard three different types of sounds beside silent flight from a disc. One is barely audible for beginner to a slightly experienced player throwing at moderate speeds. A definite swoosh can be heard fairly loudly from 450' throws with a Teebird which isn't the fastest of discs at all. Finnish champion and current European Champion Ville Piippo was a javelin thrower and has unofficially thrown a disc on an overhand shot at 138 km/h radar measured. I heard one of his less than full speed throws standing 2 meters from him and the sound was unique. It was very loud and there was sort of a chuffing noise like an engine hitting rev limiter as the disc corkscrewed to a very high altitude and stopping flat sideways with the front down. It glided to about 340'. He's achieved 500' with this throw.

During Big D 8 _the_ long distance competition in the world the winner Jussi Meresmaa from Finland too had to stop throwing because the forces generated were enough to split his skin (maybe even more tissue was damaged)from his finger tip. He wasn't the only one in the Finnish team to suffer the same damage.

It's interesting to notice that the fastest throws exceed the speed of many ice hockey players shots even though they use a stick to add leverage. Golf discs come in different weights and flight characteristics and using the lightest of discs doesn't produce good results for disc golf but can be released at even higher speeds than that 138 km/h. Maybe a world speed record would make the show even more interesting.

Avery Jenkins is a good candidate for world record making because with an unofficial throw he has reportedly exceed the official record of 250 meters on flat ground. Avery is also a very good subject to film because his throwing technique is among the very cleanest which means he doesn't have clutter or unnecessary motions in his throws which do mask the important parts of a throw to a degree. Thus making observations and learning from watching him much easier to the millions of players world wide. Also watching him throw is visibly aesthetically appealing to the uninitiated because of the purity of the motions match ballet or dancing when the motions are performed flawlessly. With the added bonus of visbly seeing a very strong athlete making a visibly clearly huge effort in getting a disc up to speed. It is awesome to awtch even for those who don't know anything about the game. Unlike golf disc golfers must use a lot of power and that makes this sport more visually appealing to any sport fan.

Artistry in motion combined with the art of flight and the built in wonder of flight in every human will make for great viewing in an episode of Time Warp.

Every disc golfer will tell that watching a disc in flight is wonderfully beautiful and adding to that a long flight performed with pure technique flies even more beautifully. I've literally had passers by stop and gawk at a disc in flight after I threw it. Both regular low line drives and 70'+ high maximum distance throws and I'm just an amateur. That testifies how great it is to see an athletic performance pushing the boundaries of what's humanly possible. Visually there are few sports actions that are as interesting for a viewer than a maximum effort disc golf throw. People just don't see anything close to as stunning performance in most sports and seeing such an action unexpectedly stops thinking and drops jaws and make very emotional responses. I've had top of the lung cheering from passers by child and adult more times than I can remember. Lot's of oohs and aahs as well.

Another good part about choosing Avery Jenkins as a subject for filming is his willingness to participate in this episode. Among disc golfers he's a star and belongs to what we disc golfers say the first family of disc golf having several world championship titles in his family. So there's certainly interest in seeing him from a fan perspective. He's also one of the best loved players in the disc golf community and that is what we disc golfers are: An extended family. Every disc golfer is like a friend we know or are waiting to get to know. It all stems from the origins of the sport when the initiator of the sport said: "Whoever has the most fun wins". He also pushed frisbee spirit and Avery is a great example of that. In few if any other sports are the top players including Avery willing to teach their tricks openly.

Another example of community and spirit is that getting disc golf on television and slow motion footage of a top player on Time Warp has been discussed on several disc golf forums and everyone is excited about the possibility to see that materialize. Many disc golfers are now aware of the push to get Avery to the show and word of mouth and the forums will spread the news if the show happens.

There will be a large disc golfer audience for that show and I think I'm not the only disc golfer who would get non players to watch that episode.

Disc golf as a sport is often mistaken for an easy activity instead of a sport. Few if any disc golfers have avoided hearing that it's just a play for kids tossing a piece of plastic to each other on the beach. That false assumption needs to change and the cracked finger tips example tells of the forces generated in disc golf are matched by few human motions. Maybe only by rotational martial arts kicks or punches can compare. It may be an interesting comparison too to observe the amount of kinetic energy created and the energy in tendon bounce in the forearm and the crushing pressure of the rim of the disc flattening the tip of the index finger just before the disc rips not slides out of the hand to martial arts.

I forgot to write about the interesting aspect of physics that are involved in the power generation and mechanics of a throw and a disc in flight. That makes for interesting study material in a fun way for any physics student and good material for a teacher to liven up the class.

Disc sports including disc golf have from the beginning of the sport been played at universities and a great many professors and other professionals have been consulted about improving throwing and the discs. Which has evolved the throwing to become way different than playing catch with a friend with a tall unbeveled edge disc. Disc manufacturers test discs designs in wind tunnels just like airplane and car developers do.

A segment on smoke trails in a wind tunnel in slow motion should illustrate just how difficult a port this is because if the disc isn't flying at perfect attitude it's gonna shorten the flight dramatically. And seeing different types of air flows and vortices is handy in illustrating how complex the physics of disc flight is.

I would like to think that disc manufacturers would like to participate at least in this segment. I know that Dave McCormack of Gateway Disc Sports wants to grow the sport and craves publicity and has published videos of how they manufacture discs and blogs about designing discs and telling how they are affected by physics. The competition knows this so it would make sense for everyone else to take the spotlight off of him and getting publicity for themselves. If this show happens it doesn't matter much who and which company is involved because each manufacturer shares the need and willingness to make the sport bigger.

Come on Time warp, I love this show and you guys need to do this. Seeing a Avery throw a disc at 2000 frames per second would be awesome!

Seeing a segment on disc golf would be amazing! Get Avery throwing some big hyzer bombs, and watching it at 2000 fps would be incredibly cool!

I would also like to see disc golf featured on "Time Warp". Perhaps focusing first on the form of a top pro and distance champion like Avery Jenkins, and then the actual mechanics/physics of the disc flying through the air. There is a lot more going on than just "tossing a saucer".

Great idea for a show. Power vs finesse, long arms vs short arms, leverage, transfer of energy from legs all the way to wrist, long run-up vs no run-up, and that is just the thrower! Wind tunnel testing of various disc types and explanation of the different rim designs would also be interesting.

Analyzing a disc throw in slow motion would be a very entertaining episode of Time Warp. Especially if it featured one of the top players in the sport like Avery Jenkins

The different types/styles of disc flight would be cool. Sometimes I wonder if the disc's are remote controlled by the way they can glide side to side, flip, and other ways.

A pro like Avery Jenkins could show some pretty sweet throws.

I know many people who would tune in for a demonstration of this.

If this were made and was eventually viewable through Discovery's website (online pilot perhaps?) it would result in enormous amounts of internet traffic. This would be terrific for Discovery from a marketing perspective and for those who pay advertising with their website.

The community of disc golfers is not only much larger than most suspect, it's growing exponentially.

COME ON! This thread has 53 replies - far more than any other I've seen on here. on top of that, you guys had AVERY JENKINS HIMSELF on here, offering his time to be filmed for an episode. In the world of disc golf, that's like getting Tiger Woods to post on your website offering to be filmed.

What's the problem with disc golf? The masses demand to see it - if there's some logistical reason, at least give us a reason!

I'm new here, and want to submit a myth, but this might be the wrong spot.

Myth: "Would a frisbee thrown on the moon (therefore, a vaccum) go further than one thrown on earth. You would say no, because there is no air to hold it up. BUT, as my cousin says, why did the golf ball hit by Alan Shepard on the moon go so far?

you should do a time warp episode on Guts Frisbee. Guts is a game where two teams of 5 stand 14 meters apart from each other. You throw a frisbee at each other at speeds up to 80 mph. Rarely is a disc caught straight up. It would be cool to see how to frisbee warps when it hits a players hand and the spin during the shot. The defensive strategy of bobbling would also be cool to see frame by frame. I play Guts so if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at Houlie92@charter.net

Having disc golf on Time Warp would be amazing. There are so many different physics going on during a throw. Having a pro like Avery Jenkins throw slowed down would be incredible to watch.

DG is the fastest growing rec sprot in the nation and should be included in next years TimeWarp season. We have tour players that are throwing 400+ feet and can make the disc go just about anywhere.

Please look into working with Innova or Discraft to start this process as they have sponsored players that would def. be interested in the science aspect of the sport.
