Sorry to the above poster, but 5'5" to 5'7" is not average height for a 13 year old.

Please check out the website linked for starters - it even works for Freshmen in the midwest Wink provided you are caucasion. If you are not caucasion, you will need to do a Google search for your race.

Please don't get so hung up about your height at such a tender age. Do NOT pay any attention to averages. I grew 4" between high school and college. For all you know, you could hit a growth spurt in the near future and end up 18 and six feet tall. Being that tall as a woman has similar drawbacks.

Doctors use "percentile" charts. My kids were always 90th percentile for height and weight. Meaning, that 90 percent of children their age were shorter/lighter than them. So, have you always been shorter than the average? Maybe you need to ask your doctor to show you your previous height and weight charts.

Also, our pediatrician told us that girls generally stop growing within 12 -18 months of their first period. You will be able to gauge if you will still have time to grow by that.

Your family will be a good predictor of what you will turn out to grow to. Are your parents tall or short or average? What about your siblings?

Don't be overly concerned about this. Keep your nutrition good and get enough exercise and sleep and your body will take care of itself. There's nothing you can do about your height anyway.

My parents are about average height, I dont know about weight though. I have always been shorter than average. In kindergarten I was about maybe 2.5, 3.5 feet tall and weighed about 25 pounds. I guess it might have to do with when mom had cancer when she was pregnant with me. She went to the doctor one day and he accedentally made her go into labor at about 8 months. Were both ok now though Smile My brother is about 6'2 (hes 23) and my sister is about 5'7 (shes 21) but we have different dads so that might be why. Who knows!

I was always much tiny-er than all of my friends in junior high. I grew a lot in high school and now that I am in college I actually tend to feel tall (something I never used to feel) at 5' 3". As for your weight- you are probably a little below average weight for your height.

harliegurl, someone else said it so I just want to repeat it--don't get caught up in the averages at your age. In order to get an average there has to be taller/heavier and shorter/thinner. At your age, just enjoy your body for what it is. It is only a waste of time obssesing about having/being something other than what you are. My experience: family genetics dictated that I have a booty but in Jr. and Sr. High school it wasn't overly large. However, "mean" mostly girls commented and I felt self conscious. I always wanted to be thinner--and now how I wish I could just have that shape back. I should have enjoyed it while I had it instead of wanting to be something I never could. I have very dark very curly hair and I hated it. I wanted blonde, straight hair; thinking somehow that would magically transform me into a "popular" girl. Now, my hair is almost completely gray and the curl is all leaving so I have to tell myself now to be careful what I wish for--I might just get it.

You need to believe that you are beautiful just the way you are. Know it, own it! Rejoice in what you are and don't stress about what you think you should be. Don't grow into your 30's and 40's and look back widhing you hadn't been so concerned about averages!

If it's any consolation, I was always small as well. When I started HS a few months after I turned fourteen, I was 5'0 and weighed only about 90 lbs. I now stand at 5'6, and let's just say I filled out very nicely. Smile I was a major late bloomer and didn't have my growth spurt until my freshman year-I was 5'4 by the time it ended. As has already been mentioned, don't become preoccupied with your height at this point, particularly if you just began menstruation or haven't started yet. I started HS shorter than most people and am now taller than almost all of my friends by a good 3" or so. "Average" height should be taken with a grain of salt, just like many other "average" characteristics, unless being "different" poses serious health risks.

harlie_gurl, I understand how you feel because when I was a teenager I wanted to fit in and feel that I looked like everyone else. Only I was always shorter than most girls in my class. I think I was never farther back in "size place" than 3rd from the shortest in class. I ended up at 5 feet, 1 and 3/4 inches. My mother was 4'11" and my Dad is 5'11". I have another girlfriend whose parents were the exact same heights as mine but she ended up 5'7" tall! So you see it can vary a lot.

Anyway, I hated being short for many years until I finally accepted myself and realized that I don't have to be "average" or look like anyone else to be attractive. Now my height is not an issue at all save for the fact that I hate having to get up on step stools all the time just to reach anything in a closet or kitchen cabinet!

Then again, when I was a teenager I also hated what I thought were my large feet (I wear a six and a half) and my "fat" ankles. I hated my china-white skin and felt that I looked like a dead fish. I also wished I could have blonde hair. In other words, there wasn't much I did like about my appearance.

I hope that one day if you do end up short as a full grown adult that you can accept yourself and forget about what everyone else looks like. I wish I could have gotten over that sooner because if I'd really looked in the mirror I'd have realized that I was truly a beautiful woman. I am 47 now, but when I look at photos of myself at 21 I get tears in my eyes because back then I didn't appreciate my own beauty. It is only now that it has passed somewhat that I can appreciate it. That's sad.

I think women torture themselves over their appearance needlessly. They have a warped view of their own attractiveness that only holds them back from self-acceptance. I realize that the media and fashion industry don't help women accept themselves and their variety, so now we have generations of young women who feel fat, short and unattractive unless they are clones of Jessica Simpson. Very, very sad.
